About University of Wisconsin-Superior

The University of Wisconsin-Superior, UW-Superior, UWS or Superior, is a public university located in Superior, which is a city in the US state of Wisconsin, serving as the county seat of Douglas County, with a population of more than 27 300 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census.


The university was established in 1893 and was originally named Superior Normal School. It acquired it present name in 1971, when it became part of the University of Wisconsin System.


UWS offers its students `more than 30 undergraduate majors - solid academic programs such as accounting, teacher education and biology, and innovative programs such as legal studies, art therapy, and transportation and logistics management`, including a Graduate Studies program, which offers advanced degrees in teacher education and administration, counseling, visual arts and communicating arts.


Athletics

UWS' athletic teams are nicknamed the Yellowjackets and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are old gold and black, and their mascot is Buzz the Yellowjacket.
